I was under the impression that the Miktex developer has abandoned it in favor of TexLive, which works well on both Windows and Linux.  Is that information inaccurate? There are two versions for Windows, the "installer" (52 MB) and the "bundle" (261 MB). The former relies on an existing MiKTeX installation; the latter installs a version of MiKTeX. If you use the bigger installer and you already have MiKTeX, you end up with two MiKTeX installations (the original is not replaced).
