I'm with Richard here: Simple step (1) checkbox might be sufficient.
If someone makes use  of complicated microtype parameters, then
Preamble seems the way to go (instead of the GUI checkbox).

The only question: what happens if user has selected both checkbox and
added a separate  \usepackage[param1]{microtype} call in Preamble?
