It does not look like I have a memory problem on my computer. Here is
what
top displays (lyx with the document and some terminals, xfig, ...
started):

just for additional information: the document I am working has about 25
drawings in combined ps/latex-format and about 5 scans as a postscript
file.
The document itself is smaller than 200kB.
