To make a line of arbitrary length, you can use
\hrule width 5em
(which is large as 5 times the 'm' letter in the font; you can use
most units here like "in" for inches or cm). This command should be
marked as TeX. It is also possible to specify the height of the line,
and many other things you probably do not care about.

The fact that a sequence of underscore looks like a line is not a very
interesting feature, IMO. If you want a line, request a line. Of
course, LyX should have some built-in support for this, so that you do
not have to resort to raw TeX commands.
