Try to reconfigure after starting LyX - it should the be able to find it.
Not that you have to restart LyX for the changes to take effect.

Yes, absolutely.

Much better unless all your pictures and tables are generated from M$soft 
programs in which case you end up with a lot of extra work converting these
things.

LyX never dies :-) 
It crashes only on very few occasions, actually I cant even remember one.
If it crashes, it leaves you with a file that you can recover from. 
LyX has never "eaten" any of my files, made them vanish or even look 
ugly or smell bad.

Nevertheless, a backup of important work is of course always mandatory.
