Funny Hyphenation

I have a two-column article using LyX. It hyphenates words like study as
s-tudy and pollutant as pollutan-t. It also does this for a number of
other words. What is wrong and how do I fix it? I can control it
somewhat by implanting a hypehnation point. Is there a way to forbid
hyphenation for a particular word? I've tried placing a hypehn in front,
like -study but occationally the hyphen will show up at the end of a
line.
