TeX's way of embedding text in math mode doesn't seem very general, so
I have my doubts about this.  I did try it, but I couldn't get the
macro editor to accept an argument after \tipaencoding -- in fact I
got a core dump trying to do it.

Tipa provides phonetic symbols and various diacritics and combinations
of diacritics that can be placed over or under characters, or as
superscripts or subscripts.  I think it is essentially impossible
to get a WYSIWYM screen display, so coloring the text on screen to
show its special status is all I can think of to do.
