The utf8 option for inputenc was introduced in the LaTeX release of Dec 2003, announced as "partial, experimental" back then (http://www.latex-project.org/ltnews/ltnews15.pdf). The distributions included it by and by. teTeX, for instance, included it in version 3.0, released in Feb 2005. That's fairly recent I think. Jürgen
