auto is different from default in the sense that there is an intrinsic encoding, what does not happen for default. So your example would work the same, even in this case. The question as Jean-Marc has been raising is that we should control the encoding in which latex is exported and expect for lyx to do the right convertions in any case. -- José Abílio
