OK I understand that everybody has other preferences. I just thaught why did users pay a lot for Photoshop when LyX opens images with MSpaint. MSPaint is always the default image editor, programs like The GIMP and Photoshop doesn't change this setting.

That is not a problem of LyX, but a problem of photoshop and gimp.

Yes ,but my intention is to make things as easy as possible for the user. And if we can do this easily with the installer why not. I know that you disagree with me in this case but I have enough experiences with users that ask me everytime the same: "program x is not recognized." "Your installer miss support for program y."
But OK I will accept the current situation.

Nope. The user should use Tools->Preferences. lyxrc.dist is only for settings made by the installer, e.g. OS specific settings.

I know, but what do people do when they want to change the image viewer? - They type in "Photoshop" in the viewer/editor field and save the changes. But this doesn't work because Photoshop is unfortunately not in the PATH system variable so that they have to specify the whole path to photoshop.exe or modify the path entry in LyX's preferences (and not lyxrc.dist - my mistake). Users aren't stupid but sometimes haven't enough background to adjust things so that they work. At work it's me who set the preferences and the users later don't change something there as they don't know what and how. But OK.

I just wonder why configure.py prints something like:
"checking for text editor: vim ... no"
But I have vim installed. When I add the correct executable for vim to configure.py, it finds it.

I repeat myself: Expect that part of configure.py to go once we are able to use the OS default editors/viwers also on unix.

Ah, now I understand this.

I have the problem that I have three adequate editors for TeX-files installed but have no menu entry for View -> LaTeX(plain) and View -> Text because configure.py doesn't set them and doesn't find them. It only checks for notepad but sets it as editor, not as viewer. ...

It seems like you still not got it: You can imagine many situations where the existing file associations in windows are not correct for LyX, and where configure.py could repair that, but _we do not want that_.

I understand this now. Please be patient, I couldn't know this as I missed the last two months of development and was a bit surprised about the new configuration scripts. (I like them btw. as they are much cleaner and we can get rid of the shell tools). I meant that configure.py should set not only the editor but also a viewer for TeX-files. If notepad is used for that - fine, better than nothing.

thanks for your explanations and regards
Uwe
