Lyx 1.4.2 on Windows XP (Home and Pro, both sp 2).
The behavior of the detached Math Panels is very un-Windows-like: I
wonder if this is determined by the Qt library, or whether it can be fixed.
a. On the right of the panels there are the three traditional Windows
controls for closing, maximizing and minimizing-to-the-Taskbar. None
of them has any effect. The only way one can do this is to
right-click on the Taskbar icon and go from there.
b. It is not possible to drag the panels to a new location. Again,
the only way to do this is to right-click on the Taskbar entry, and
then choose Move.
c. Usually, when a window is not selected, clicking on its window bar
makes it active. Not the math panels: with these you need to select
via its Taskbar entry.
d. Traditionally, left-clicking on the window bar (once selected), or
on the icon at the left of the window bar, brings up the menu
containing the Move, Minimize, Maximize etc functions. In Lyx it has no effect.
As I say, I don't know whether this is forced on us by Qt or is a
conscious design decision. But for Windows users it's un-intuitive,
and it would be nice if it could be fixed, if possible.
Two final remarks. First, still related to the math panels, may I say
that I find the individual entries much too large for the information
they convey. In my view SciWord has it about right here: the icons
should be about half the size they now are (in each dimension). The
same applies to the main LyX icons, but it's less obtrusive there.
Finally, and completely unrelated to the math panel: Windows users
are used to having a main toolbar entry called Window, where it lists
and allows you to choose among your opened documents. In Lyx this is
under the View menu; it took me a while to find it, and I still have
to remind myself about it. If this wouldn't be completely foreign to
users of other OS's is there any chance of reconsidering?
