That is not necessarily different from what we have today. You can
load more than one document at a time, and you can switch between
them. If that is done by choosing a tab or selecting a doc in a menu

Yes, you are right. This is not really a case of multiple workarea here.
The interesting part with multiple workareas are viewing more than one
at the same time, and more than one view of the _same_ document.
And viewing multiple views at the same time cannot be done in a lot of
ways.
- split the screen hor/vert
- a new window
I hope we can support both ways.
The first one for sure within 1.5 if I continue my work. The second
might be a bit more complicated with regards to menubars and toolbars.
But it's definitely feasible once/if we have transfered LyXView to
BaseFrontend.
