No way! We have had configure.m4 and configure.py and that was proven
to be a pain (so we eventually get rid of m4).
The comparison is really not fair. I am talking about maintaining the
file list in Makefile.am file in sync with the one in CMakeLists.txt. It
is hardly a big job and nothing comparable to the complex things you do
in configure.py.
Unless you mean before scons or cmake work correctly.
And autotools Guru are convinced... ;-)
