Gentlemen,

I think I have to give some comments on the heated 1.4 vs. 1.5 discussion.

I understand that everybody wants to have his favourite feature available as soon as possible. However, we are obliged to provide the LyX users with a series of stable versions at the same time. If someone wants to have the very latest feature, he can grab the trunk at his own risk. However, for the majority of users, we have to be a bit more conservative. And I think Jean-Marc is doing a nice job in administrating the stable branch. He has a close look at each change but he is not too restrictive at the same time.

Starting with the release of 1.4.0, I kept track of all bug fixes. Right now there are only 10 pending patches that have not been applied to 1.4.X yet. This makes me draw the conclusion that there is no need to rush a 1.5.0 release. It shouldn't be too difficult to backport the missing bits. One problem of 1.4.0 was its early release. I think that 1.4.X will stablize soon so that the number of backports will decrease and the LyX developers can concentrate on 1.5.

Regarding cygwin: Right now there are 4 cygwin-related patches that are not part of 1.4.X. Abdel, Enrico, I am pretty sure that Jean-Marc will consider them if you provide good reasons. At least two of them look rather trivial.

Please, no more frustration! From a distance, the way LyX evolves isn't that bad.

Michael
