This is OK. But I'd rather have a enum.

Actually, with this enum and maybe a few comment, I am OK with this
patch in 1.4.2.

You are right. The patch is as clean as it can be considering how
change tracking works now. It is Michael's cleanup that will improve
the situation in 1.5.
