This is what I would give as advantage of sending patches :)

Supporting that:

I mostly work disconnected from the net. All I do is
 - fetch email
 - bulk-post email
 [- fetch news]
 [- bulk-post news]
 - svn update on one (at most 'few' selected branches)
 [- svn commit].

Things that are not visible using these methods simply do not exist in
my universe. This holds e.g for patches attached to bugzilla entries but
not send to this list. Or any other thing that could be seen when
regularily updating two dozen branches...

I am mostly connected to the net but I second that. I am too lazy to apply patches and I don't have the time either. Plus these patches might conflict with my current tree. I guess what I am saying here conflict with your description of what a good lyx developer must do Lars ;-) . So feel free to revoke my svn access. Anyway, no need to discuss that further more I guess main devels won't change their mind.
