In Latex and so inside ERT (which AFAI can tell is what we're still talking about), a ~ means a non-breaking space (and shows up as such when used inside ERT in LyX), to be used between initals, for example. The only way I can find to stop hyphenation (though this is only from a quick Google) is "\hbox{no-break}"... Apologies if I've missed the point or just outright said something dumb. Dan
