I omitted one bit of possibly relevant information. The last screen
before GS asks about Perl (which I don't have), and I instructed the
installer not to install it. This was the only departure from accepting
defaults, and also the only case where I issued a "do not install".
Ah-hah! That was indeed the missing piece of info. The field should now be
initialized correctly, come what may.

This one should now be fixed too in Version 10. Usual place.
