No, that shouldn't make a difference. At least, '--with-frontend=foo' works for me on an FC3, on a Debian unstable and on a Windows XP machine.
If it was like for me the default automake in devian is 1.4 and you need a newer one.
I tried with automake 1.7, and it was ok. I saw the difference during the ./autogen.sh
lots of warning/errors with 1.4 everythings ok with 1.7
I asked for this information in the INSTALL file. but I do not know if someone made the change.
