It is a good question. When the documentation was written, the concept of
licenses for documentation was not really crystalised yet. So, the
question was never really asked and thus never answered. I believe that a
fair interpretation of intent is that the documentation is GPL.

I belive that would be ok, but you might try to ask John Weiss who is the
main author of the documentation, and as such he would be the main
copyright holder, although many, many people have contributed, including
Matthias Ettrich who wrote the initial documentation on which everything
is based. I believe he would be the person that defined the original
license, although it was implicit. See Credits for more info on
contributors.

My personal oppinion is that a printed version of LyX documentation would
be a very welcome contribution to the community. A book with a CD in it
would definately be nice, especially if some of the profits were donated
to the LyX meeting sponsoring fund.
