I doubt this has much to do with lyx. If you're experiencing "hard" freeze like that, your kernel has died in one way or another. This might be for various reasons, I'd try first to switch your xserver into vesa mode and try if it helps. Maybe change network cards if you run off nfs. I'm afraid there's nothing that we can do to help you. If you're not running as root no such crashes should ever occur on a properly configured system, i.e. an application, no matter how buggy, should not freeze the whole system. Your hardware may be failing -- run some memtest86 and mersenne.org stress tests. If any errors are reported in 48 hours of continuoues applicaiton of either of those, fix the problem first.
