I thought going "three boxes" at least for character styles was consensus but considered to difficult for the time being. Minipages might indeed be different, though. Moreover, I am almost convinced, that "three boxes" would require a mangled metrics/rowbreaking loop pretty similar to your solution 3, so we might as well start mangling the loop... Andre'
