Maybe not, though... > Lyx knows that bold/italic/font/size/color shows visually, so not drawing a box for those is possible. A language change or a user supplied style (using \userunknownmarkup{}) could get a box/frame since there is no way to distinguish it from other text.
There is also the option of light gray frames that aren't so striking. They are weaker than the black text and therefore won't interfere much with reading. Helge Hafting
