João uses debian-unstable apparently. I have access to such a
machine...

$ latex --version
TeX (Web2C 7.4.5) 3.14159
kpathsea version 3.4.5
Copyright (C) 1997-2003 D.E. Knuth.

... and confirm that this version of latex has no problems with the
--src-specials option.

Here I use RH 8:
$ latex --version
TeX (Web2C 7.3.1) 3.14159
kpathsea version 3.3.1
Copyright (C) 1999 D.E. Knuth.

... which chokes on --src-specials
