Erm, code like

would be positioned wrongly. I _could_ report the baseline at some
stage in the page start, but I'm unsure whether this would work in
_all_ cases (such as when not using latex for instance).

I _could_ always do

1b) Make dvipng detect usage of the 'tightpage' option and use the
    image metrics within the DVI _and_ output the baseline, calculated
    from those metrics.
