Sorry to chime in after the battle, but wouldn't it be more reasonable
to define
\newenvironment{lyxbranchgrey}{\color[gray]{0.8}}{}

and then use
\begin{lyxbranchgrey}
...
\end{lyxbranchgrey}

?

Logical markup is always better, especially for tex2lyx...

Does this make sense?
