[Note that if several of you arrive at the same time at 'somewhere', a
rented car might be an option price-wise. Dresden->Chemnitz is an
additional 1.5 hours by train, car is ~4-5h from Frankfurt and Munich and a
bit more from Duesseldorf.]

I cannot tell which of the French looking airports is closest to you, but
the list suggests that there is a way to go from France to Altenburg for
less than 100 EUR.

It's only open for booking for the period 18 June - 17 July right now,
so you'd need to wait a week to get definitive answer.

It's fairly "new".

A couple of years ago the best chance to get there was using a MiG 29 ;-)

I never did that myself. www.bahn.de seems to suggest that there is are
train station located direct at Dresden airport, with three or four trains
per hour to Dresden main station at noon.

I'll try to find out some more details, though.

[Again, if there are three of you at Dresden airport at the same time,
I could fetch you by car from there. Faster (for you...), cheaper, and more
convenient.

There is really not much difference. Dresden is a bit better acessible by
car, that's it. Train seems to be around 14 EUR from either...

> Also, is it really necessary to book the train ticket in advance?

No.

[Actually the risk of missing the train and having to pay re-booking
fees would outweigh the (possibly) reduced fare...]
