I think my suggested change stops you sighing, does it not ?

There would be params.use_amsmath (not visible in UI) and
params.autouse_amsmath (visible in UI).

valildate() does

        if (need_Amsmath && autouse_amsmath)
                use_amsmath = true;

autouse_amsmath is default to true.

If I haven't irritated you, what do you think ?
