I've just tried it and I conclude that all is as it should be:
drwxr-xr-x    2 root     root         4096 Feb  4 22:55 
/usr/local/lyx/share/lyx-1.3.0pre3/xfonts

I suspect something's going wrong on Richard's side therefore.
