Hmm, interesting. What fonts do you have installed ?

Perhaps Qt is doing clever things, because we do not *explicitly* use a
particular X font. i.e. it is recognising it needs to use a different
font for displaying russian, and  finds and uses it automatically.

The reason it's failing on my box is surely, then, missing fonts on my
box
