It feels like we're misunderstanding each other here... What can you already do? Have latex start in the background, so that lyx doesn't "freeze"? About removing the process functionality in general: How do you (and others) think lyx should behave when another process/program started by lyx misbehaves? - Is it acceptable that lyx waits (frozen) for it? - Use a timeout after a certain time?
