It feels like we're misunderstanding each other here... What can 
you already do? Have latex start in the background, so that lyx doesn't 
"freeze"? 

About removing the process functionality in general:
How do you (and others) think lyx should behave when another 
process/program started by lyx misbehaves?
- Is it acceptable that lyx waits (frozen) for it?
- Use a timeout after a certain time?

I think the user at least should be informed that lyx is waiting 
for another process to finish, which I guess you get from the 
status-line, but maybe the text there could be more clear by 
changing from 
        "LaTeX run number 1"
to something like
        "Waiting for: LaTeX run number 1 to finish".
