The problem is, some people who don't use AMS, nonetheless use macros with
the same name. Concluding from the occurance of a macro \hbar that AMS is
needed is simply wrong, especially if there is no way do disable AMS after
it has been "auto-detected".

So I'd rather have AMS detection completely removed from validate(), but
- for convenience reasons as probably most users don't care - switched on
by default. This way it is possible to disable AMS if it is really not
wanted and everybody can get want he wants.
