As far as I can tell, changing the noun field to a character style field
will not make changing the code later more difficult.
While code simplification is important, features are also important.
We should have had character styles years ago, and I'm afraid it might take
years before we have a clean implementation.

The cleanest way is perhaps with insets, but this will require a much improved
handling of insets: For example, allowing an inset to break over two lines.
It will be a long time before we can have this, if at all.
