May I draw your attention to some late contributions to mathed like the
Mathematica backend or the preview implementation which are not my work?

Have we? I would believe in an open bug but not in a fix... I know that it
annoyed me once and I could not find an immediate solution. Bug ID?

A bit. Mathed has a central parser whereas the other insets do their own
parsing (even if they have a LaTeX like syntax). Insets in the math
hierarchy benefit from math_factory which is used by the parser and the
cursor.

The mathed thingy used to read LaTeX is the best "parser" we have to read
LaTeX. It produces mainly math insets. This is some relation, isn't it?
