Father would never come home again. The wasting disease had taken him two months ago. \layout Standard Martha thought, it is still 1810. It is still drizzly, damp and miserable. And it is my birthday. She looked down at the pamphlet open on her lap. Mama had borrowed it from a customer for Martha's birthday. It was about squid. Since Father had died she hadn't seen her mother laugh or even smile once. She turned again to the pamphlet on her lap, the squid world, and leaped into the ten arms of a tender-hearted squid. \layout Standard An hour later Martha closed the pamphlet. A deep rumble sounded in her belly. The loaf made from the last of the flour was still baking, the aroma delicious. Pip, Martha's half-grown terrier pup, clawed at the cottage door. \the_end
