Okay this is Friday, so bear with me. Attached a patch that adds spreadsheet functionality to the tabular. Doesn't work very well yet and is obviously limited. But if you like this kind of thing, give it a swirl.
I did this really to get to know better the LyX architecture (or lack of same) and at the same time as C++ finger practice. Hope you like it.
