A real life example from yesterday to illustrate this: I have finished an article with a large picture and needed to send it via email. I used - as always, if possible - pdflatex to get the best quality PDF output. The result was a 6.5 MB file. Then I tried it with the other PDF converters and ps2pdf offered me a 1.1MB file. The screen fonts in Acr. Reader looked ugly, but if have sent this one, because of its size. Conclusion: You have to decide by yourself which solution is "the best one". There is not "the best one" in general. Juergen.
