There is nothing wrong with "boxes" having "layouts", too. Actually I could
think of $...$ vs $$...$$ as "boxes" having a certain flag set or not.
Incidently, they have. Sort of...

There is nothing wrong with a nice UI and I see no technical reason for
sacrificing it. Actually I can't even see the reason of your fear.
