This has been in my brain for some time too (some math stuff obviously
depends on AMS), and I came to the conclusion that disallowing anything due
some environmental settings is not acceptable. I would not mind a pop up
telling me "you can't do <x> with in your current environment", but
no more interference. After all, there are losts of reason why I might do
anything to the .lyx file here and now...
