Thanks it looks great with blue now as well!

Since you appear to be a GIMP guru maybe you could try to get the
background image white-clipped or something so the embossing doesn't
distract from the text so much. I spent an hour or so playing around
yesterday trying to get the bgimage to be the blue (#4669ad) _and_ have
the embossing be less white (or less visually distracting from the text).
I ended up with a reddish tinted image that is available as:

        http://www.elec.uq.edu.au/~rae/images/LyXBannerjugbg3.gif

which has less distracting embossing on it than the other two images
provided by others on the list. It might be better to just start from
scratch again with the original banner, emboss that again and then somehow
set the colour to #4669ad.

Could you look into this please?

We could offer a high-colour or low-colour choice as well on the website
but that gets silly. Limiting to say 30 colours should still provide
acceptable smootihing without (hopefully) overloading the colour palette
on an 8-bit video card. But I'm inclinded to think we should be able to
run with what Reinhard has already produced -- after all I upgraded from
8-bit to 16-bit video about 2 months ago ;-)

See the icons already in the distribution. They have a tendency to use
between 4 and 8 colours. Not many admittedly but still enough for
reasonable quality images. Colour restrictions for icons should be a lot
tighter than for the web site I think because people only browse the web
site every so often and if it uses more colours than they have it's not
such a big deal as it would be if LyX itself ran out of colours.

So ideally the icons should all use the same small palette -- preferably
colours that we use by default for gui, text and inset colours so we
aren't adding to the colour space.
