Errr. Wasn't the whole point of yesterdays discussion that by $...$ is
robust. That means, therefore, that since André has changed mathed to use
$...$, then the \protect is NOT needed.
Or am I just being logical?
Anyway, André, the real answer is to write a section heading with some math
in and see!
