I can pick one of the label or I can offer to give you an accessor
function that returns a label count.

There is no way that I start messing aroun with popups and GUI stuff in
general.

You ask for mutation of an eqnarray into a single cell, you get it. You can
define what "mutation" means. 

How would you implement such a "ask user" function for batch mode LyX anyway?
