I don't have any personal preference since it's easy for me to change my
build script accordingly, but I don't know if JMarc's original argument
of being a <<standard part of Unix>> applies to boost, for example. That
said, I really don't know anything about these types of issues so I'm
fine with whatever you all prefer.
FWIW, the only library for which the included version is preferred with
autotools is "nod", as far as I can tell. The reason is that this is a
very small code, not commonly packaged (at least by debian/ubuntu).
The 3rdparty directory is mostly here because of the windows port.
