Yes, I think we can bump to GCC 8.5 and Qt 5.12.

8.5 or 8, I guess. They should be equivalent, except for bugs.

Agreed.

If someone wants to go through the sources and cleanup ifdefs we can switch
anytime.

By doing this we should get access to C++17, so my favourite new feature
highlights:
- if & switch with initializers: if (status_code c = foo(); c != SUCCESS) {...
    https://www.open-std.org/jtc1/sc22/wg21/docs/papers/2016/p0305r1.html
- structured bindings to get direct access inside pairs & maps in loops: for (const
auto& [key,val] : myMap) {
    https://www.cppstories.com/2022/structured-bindings/

Looks good. I thought all the fun stuff was in C++20.

Do you plan to do the clenaup wrt ifdefs?

I can. Instead of compiler versions, we could check for the features we want (like we do now in LYX_CXX_CXX11_FLAGS (config/lyxinclude.m4)) from C++17. Would you have a snippet for me to add in there (and rename to LYX_CXX_CXX17_FLAGS)?

The Qt part will be easier.
