why did you type \~{ } and \^{ }, and not simply ~ ^?
Remember linuxdoc isn't latex, so you shouldn't use latex with linuxdoc.
Also if you want a i without the accent there is one entitie that refers
to it, but not \i (I need to see a table, I don't remember it now).
