Maybe one of the more knowledgable users of LaTeX can enlighten me:

Can the "LaTeX type" [1] of an (displayed) equation (or eqnarray) be
reconstructed if only the following are given:

  - a count of "columns" of the "whole thing"
  - a count of "rows" of the "whole thing"
  - some information whether the whole thing or individual "rows" should
    be numbered

If so, how would one determine that type?
If not, what else is necessary?

[1]: I mean the "wrapper" around the "real math" that (La)TeX needs, like
\(...\), \[...\], \begin{eqnarray}...\end{eqnarray},
\begin{eqnarray*}...\end{eqnarray*} etc.
