Since this deviates a bit from how I use LyX, I was curious whether some explanation might be helpful.

I think it could be clearer that the "Save" step is optional for viewing a document. LyX is totally fine with just viewing a temporary created document which I often find handy, in particular if I just want to try something out. So, the step might be more accurately,

"• *Optionally, s*ave your document with File->Save As."

I think that the intent was to explain the minimal traits of a normal use. These certainly include saving in most cases.

Also, once the viewer shows the document, I found it handy to just use the viewer's Save feature instead of LyX's Export feature. Is that something that is not advised for some reason?

I would not know, I never do that :) But I think there are cases (e.g. DVI files), where the preview file depends on external files and therefore the export version is safer than the view version, which can refer to some files in /tmp.

While looking at the Export feature I noticed that the Export menu might be a bit intimidating for the newcomer who might not know what to choose here in order to get the desired export format, in particular if it is not advised to use the viewer for this operation. In that case, maybe the step could be explained better like

I'd say that viewing though menus is equally intimidating.
