I'll just keep adding my thoughts on the language selector here even

I think I have implemented almost every of your (and other's)
suggestions to this dialog (and as quickly as I could in parallel to my
real life job), so I think this is not fair.

Sorry, this was not at all meant as a criticism. It was really just a comment on the fact that there was no response in form of an answer on the newsgroup. Depending on the computer I have available at the moment, I am not always able to compile LyX and hence able to test what has been implemented. So, without response on the list, I run the risk of saying redundant things. Just so you know.

I find it strange that the "Preferred language" selector goes away
once
one has chosen a language. Isn't it reasonable to want to change the
preferred language even while selecting the files? Why not just
select
the preferred language based on the last active selection of a
language
for a template? And if that is already the case, the fact that one
can
explicitly chose a preferred language at the beginning seems to
obfuscate this.

We can only open a file in an existing language. If you click on a
file, then the dialog will:

* check whether the currently preferred language is available for this
file. If so, this language will be selected as "File language"

* If not, it is checked whether the file is available in the GUI
language. If so, this language will be selected as "File language"

* If not, the dialog will fallback to English, for which we (should)
have a version in any case.

As to "Preferred Language", I have added this since people (including
you, IIRC) found it irritating to have an empty language combo if no
item is selected. Since we cannot guess at this point which file will
be selected (and thus which languages will be available), the combo
consists of all languages we have for the files altogether.

I called it "Preferred Language", since we cannot guarantee at this
point that we can deliver this.

And believe me, the whole thing is complex enough and costed my enough
time to get it what I think is right.

Hope this clarifies things.

The empty language selector was confusing only when it seemed to be part of the filter. I take it that has been taken care of already in other ways. So, just disabling it if no file is chosen seems clearer to me.
