I just got an email from a user of LyX on macOS that was surprised that
LyX asked for access to photos. See the attached screenshot.
Do we rely on a Qt module that for some reason wants access to photos on
Mac? Or is this expected for some other reason? Has anyone else seen
this? I was pretty surprised to hear about this.
I don't really understand exactly what the dialog is asking. Is it
asking for LyX to have permission to use a "photos" application? Or is
it asking to have access to read from a directory?
The user who sent me the screenshot did not provide any more information
on what triggered this dialog. Perhaps they copy/pasted a photo into
LyX or something like that?

I've never seen this for LyX. What happens is to allow access to the Photos
library or not. That’s a directory in users home directory, a container for the
photo collection. Answer this question with yes adds LyX to the list of
applications with read (and write?) access for photos. This is managed in the
system preferences for security. See screen shot below.
Interesting, thanks for the description.
It would be nice to know what triggered the question. I failed to trigger it by
copy/paste of an image.
They said that it happened after (but not immediately after)
copy/pasting a selection from a Word document into LyX that contained a
picture. LyX asked to save the picture (as expected), the user saved the
picture, and then 10 minutes or so later is when the dialog appeared.
I'll ask them to keep an eye out in case it happens again.
This might not have come before since the security feature was
introduced only with the latest update (10.14, Mojave). See *Excessive
Data Access Request User Permissions* at
