I'll certainly trust the native speakers, but according to this https://english.stackexchange.com/questions/13144/separated-versus-sepa rate the past participle strikes me correct given that the environment is actually split ("Insert a frame above that has been separated from the one here" rather than "Insert a separate frame above").
